Apology to Ron Bennett

Posted at 12:10 am by Scott Whitmore

I've heard from a couple of folks about the breaking news story I wrote on the regional touring series merging, and I need to make something about it clear.

My intention with that story was not to put a "black hat" on anyone, especially not Ron Bennett. From my first phone conversation with him, while working on the story about Mickey Beadle leaving Evergreen Speedway, I found Ron to be first and foremost passionate about improving the state of late-model racing in the Pacific Northwest.

Ron tirelessly worked to bring the Northwest Tour to life after NASCAR bolted, and he did so at great expense to himself and his family. Very simply, the reason he did it is because he loves the sport and the people involved in it.

I'm a relative newcomer to the regional racing scene, but it didn't take long for me to realize there are a lot of very strong personalities involved with late-model racing. My intent with the tour merger story was to... ... [Read More]

Skagit Speedway update

Posted at 3:46 pm by Scott Whitmore

Interested in sprint car racing? There is a great story on the Skagit Speedway Web site about the reconciliation between Skagit owner Steve Beitler and Grays Harbor's Debbie Brownfield, who went through some difficult times after Debbie's late husband -- and Steve's friend -- Fred Brownfield was denied in his attempt to buy Skagit Speedway.

Check it out RIGHT HERE

For those of you who didn't know, Steve and Debbie were married on Nov. 7. There is a wedding picture on the speedway's home page, RIGHT HERE.

The linked story above is by Craig Murphy, who's a freelancer and a great writer that I've had the pleasure of working with a few times this year. Its a few fews old, but a good read. Enjoy. ... [Read More]

Malsam finishes 21st at Homestead

Posted at 11:41 pm by Scott Whitmore

HOMESTEAD, Fla. — Tayler Malsam wasn’t even aware of the part he played in deciding the 2009 NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series championship.

Making just his second start in the series in the season-ending Ford 200 on Friday at Homestead-Miami Raceway, the 19-year-old Mill Creek resident spun out after tangling with veteran Jack Sprague on lap 132, bringing out a caution that led to a green-white-checkered finish.

“We were running good — I don’t know what happened,” Malsam said by phone late Friday. “My spotter said clear, but Sprague said I wasn’t. I don’t know what happened, if he got me or I got him.”

Malsam’s Bill Davis Racing teammate Johnny Benson, who entered the night with a slim three-point lead over Ron Hornaday Jr., won his first series title after benefitting from two late yellows — Malsam’s and another one a few laps earlier. ... [Read More]

Sign of the times?

Posted at 10:10 pm by Scott Whitmore

It can hardly be called a surprise that Chip Ganassi with Felix Sabates Racing will merge with DEI for next season. Read about it here: (CLICK HERE)

Both teams had bleak futures ahead if they stood pat, with sponsors dropping off or heading to other teams. And with the way the economy is right now, I doubt if we've seen the last merger of Cup-level teams.

Snohomish, Wash., native Kevin Hamlin, a test driver for Chip Ganassi with Felix Sabates Racing, said in an email on Wednesday that he was unsure what, if any, impact the merger would have on him. He noted that DEI does not have a test driver. ... [Read More]

Tayler Malsam still needs votes

Posted at 10:26 am by Scott Whitmore

Sweet looking truck, huh? I'll get to that in a second.

Last week I posted an item about Mill Creek, Wash., racer Tayler Malsam having an entry in the Bell Helmets "Why I choose Bell" online video contest. Malsam's video made it into the top 10, and so now he's in the final round of voting.

So, if you'd like to help him out, navigate over to www.bellracing.com and vote for his video.

OK -- that's the truck Malsam will be driving this weekend for the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series season finale at Homestead-Miami. Malsam recently signed a deal to drive full-time in the truck series for Bill Davis Racing next year.

I'm going to talk to Malsam about his future plans in the very near future, but for now just enjoy looking at that truck. ... [Read More]
