Scout.com football player rankings

Posted at 12:49 pm by Mike Cane, Herald Writer

Since school is out and my work schedule is less hectic I finally have a chance to catch up on some things I meant to do months ago.

This includes checking in with some of the area’s most talented Class of 2009 athletes to see what colleges they’re considering.

At the top of my list is senior-to-be Tony Heard, Edmonds-Woodway’s running back/linebacker who was named the 2007-2008 Gatorade Washington Football Player of the Year and The Herald’s 2007 All-Area Offensive Football Player of the Year.

Heard already received an offer from the University of Washington but is still considering his options.

I tried to dig up some scouting news about Heard and I found the 2009 Scout.com Northwest Hot 100 list. Heard is ranked No. 50, the best among local players. Kamiak linebacker Marcel Seely is No. 51.

The other area athletes on the Hot 100 list are Lynnwood DE/RB Geoff Meinken (No. 64) and Mountlake Terrace DB/RB/WR Billy Lechtenberg (No. 99).

According to Scout.com and several other reports, Meinken (6-foot-4, 250 pounds) has verbally committed to Washington State University. ... [Read More]

Dunking in women’s basketball

Posted at 2:35 pm by Mike Cane, Herald Writer

Sparks dunk on Storm.

That headline in The Herald yesterday caught my attention. Dunks are still rare in women’s basketball but Los Angeles Sparks rookie Candace Parker is changing that perception.

On Tuesday Parker, a 6-foot-4 forward, dunked in L.A.’s WNBA victory against the Seattle Storm. It was the second straight game Parker had a slam.

According to a Los Angeles Times story Parker’s jams are the second and third in WNBA history. Lisa Leslie, who also plays for the Sparks, had the league’s first (and, until Parker came along, only) dunk six years ago.

This got me thinking about dunking in high school girls basketball. I’ve never covered a game where a girl has even attempted a slam, but it happens.

Meet Brittney Griner, a 6-8 post from Houston. The Class of 2009 standout regularly dunks for her Nimitz High School team.

An article on ESPN.com calls her the future of women’s basketball.

I’ve certainly never seen anyone like her. To watch Griner in action click here or search “high school girl dunker” on YouTube. ... [Read More]

On the Web: Gatorade winners

Posted at 1:34 pm by Mike Cane, Herald Writer

Every school year we report the winners of Gatorade’s Washington Player of the Year awards in various sports.

Among the 10 winners during the 2007-08 school year, only one was from a local school: Edmonds-Woodway’s Tony Heard, a running back/linebacker who received the football honor. You can see the complete list of 2007-08 winners here.

In 2006-07 the lone area winner was Brandon Kelley of the Snohomish boys soccer team.

This stuff is all compiled on a fancy Gatorade Player of the Year Web site. It has info about winners from other states and explains the history of the awards.

To see a list of Washington winners that goes back to 1985-86 click here. ... [Read More]

Can you relate?

Posted at 4:31 pm by Mike Cane, Herald Writer

One of the most important skills a coach can have is the ability to relate to players.

Coaches don’t necessarily have to be a friend to their athletes. But from what I’ve seen coaches who are good at building positive relationships, in addition to knowing the X’s and O’s of their particular sport, seem to have the most success.

I thought about this Monday after I talked on the phone to John Low, Everett High’s new head girls basketball coach. Low is a 1989 Everett grad. He was a point guard for the Seagulls boys basketball team.

But unlike some area coaches I’ve interviewed, Low wasn’t a prep star. He said he played one season with the varsity hoops team (his senior year) and started seven or eight games.

Before that, he steadily worked his way up, playing a season on Everett’s freshman team, a season on the sophomore team, and a season on the junior varsity squad.

In other words, he worked hard to keep his spot in the basketball program throughout his prep career. It means as a coach he has something in common with the entire spectrum of players he’ll work with, whether they are varsity-tested returners or inexperienced but dedicated contributors.

Said Low, “I believe I can relate to kids on any level.” ... [Read More]

Flashback: 2006 Jackson baseball team

Posted at 4:18 pm by Mike Cane, Herald Writer

This morning I was sorting through a tall stack of old work-related stuff — rosters, state-tournament programs, newspapers — and I found something interesting.

It was the season stat sheet for the 2006 Jackson High baseball team, arguably one of the best squads in state history. The Timberwolves went 27-0, won the Class 4A state championship and ended the year ranked No. 2 in the nation by Baseball America magazine.

For a quick refresher on what Jackson accomplished, click here and here.

Back to the stat sheet I dug up today.

The numbers the Timberwolves compiled in ’06 are mind-blowing. Here are some of the most impressive team batting stats.

*Batting average: .410
*Home runs: 33
*On-base percentage: .497
*Runs batted in: 263

The team’s pitching stats were also ridiculously good.

*Earned-run average: 0.95 (in 169 innings)
*Strikeouts: 205

Jackson’s lineup was filled with standouts that season. The biggest name was Travis Snider, who became a first-round draft pick of the Toronto Blue Jays. Snider’s offensive totals that season included a .500 average, 11 home runs, 45 RBI and 50 runs scored.

Snider didn’t lead the team in RBI. That honor went to Joey Lind, who had 46.

Six Jackson players with at least 30 at-bats hit better than .400: Snider, Joey Petosa (.500), Chris Lynch (.489), Lind (.455), Joe Markovich (.406) and Danny Oh (.404).

The team’s primary starting pitchers, Cam Nobles and Geoff Brown, both went 10-0. Nobles had a 0.71 ERA and 99 strikeouts in 59 innings. Brown finished with a 1.06 ERA and 68 K’s in 59-2/3 innings.

Looking back on this, I realize I might never cover a prep team, in any sport, that was so utterly dominant. Those Timberwolves were in a class of their own. ... [Read More]

New football team has slick Web site

Posted at 5:02 pm by Mike Cane, Herald Writer

A team that is months away from playing its first official game already has a spiffy Web site.

I recently stumbled upon the Glacier Peak High School football squad’s online home. Glacier Peak, which will open this fall, is located in Snohomish. The Grizzlies will compete in the Wesco 3A league with Everett, Lynnwood, Meadowdale and Shorecrest.

To see Glacier Peak’s football Web site click here.

Glacier Peak head football Rory Rosenbach has been busy, or whoever he asked to run the site has been anyway.

The site includes a team roster of 67 players. (All of them will be either sophomores or juniors next school year — Glacier Peak won’t have seniors its first season.)

Other info provided: details about the coaching staff, the team’s 2008 schedule, and a banner that lists the number of days until the season begins. ... [Read More]

From track and field to … bull riding

Posted at 6:23 pm by Mike Cane, Herald Writer

Now that the spring sports season is over, I’m spending more time doing phone interviews and writing about coaching changes instead of getting outside and covering games.

Considering the continually crummy weather we’re having, I’m not too upset about the situation. At least it’s dry and cozy inside the Herald building.

This past weekend I attended a sporting event for the first time since May 24, when I was in Pasco for the Class 3A/4A state track and field championships. This time, however, I wasn’t working. I wasn’t even in Washington.

For the first time in a while, I watched as a fan instead of as a reporter.

No notepad. No audio recorder. No laptop computer.

The event was the rodeo at the annual Whoop-Up Trail Days celebration in Conrad, Mont. That’s right, I went to Montana and watched cowboys and cowgirls compete in a variety of competitions, including steer wrestling, calf roping and bull riding.

Fortunately I didn’t have to write about it … That’s good because at times I had absolutely no idea what was going on. But that was part of the fun.

I don’t expect the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association to add rodeo to its roster of sanctioned sports any time soon, but maybe I’ll research the various events a bit — just in case.

Gatorade softball player of the year

Posted at 5:06 pm by Mike Cane, Herald Writer

For the second consecutive year Sam Skillingstad is the Gatorade Washington Softball Player of the Year.

Skillingstad is a senior pitcher from Shadle Park High School in Spokane. The University of Oregon recruit was 28-1 on the mound with a 0.39 earned-run average. She tallied 396 strikeouts in 178 innings and led Shadle Park to the Class 4A championship game.

Skillingstad was also a potent hitter. She batted .417, drove in 37 runs, scored 28 runs and hit nine home runs.

Typing the impressive stats compiled by Skillingstad makes me think of our area's brightest softball stars. It was very difficult to select an All-Area Player of the Year this spring because we had some extremely strong candidates, including three dominant pitchers: Monroe's Jordan Birch, Cedarcrest's Hillary Barker and Everett's Cory Mattson.

In the end, we selected Mattson, largely because her outstanding performance at the Class 3A state tournament helped Everett place third, best in program history. To read the All-Area story about Mattson click here.

Sometimes I'm forced to leave interesting details out of a story. It happens because I'm told to limit the story to a predetermined length, or because it just doesn't fit the flow of the article.

For the Mattson All-Area story, I left out the fact that she competed with something called Raynaud's disease, which causes poor circulation in parts of the body, including fingers.

That seems pretty problematic for a pitcher who needs to grip the ball. The unusually cold weather this spring didn't help. Mattson said she's had Raynaud's as long as she can remember.

"You just kind of have to deal with it and try to not think about it," she said.

Said Everett softball coach Kyle Peacocke: "It's kind of amazing that she's battled through that."
