Learn about plans for Camano Island park at party It’s a community effort to create the park. CAMANO ISLAND — The groundbreaking party today for the Stanwood-Camano Rotary Adventure Playground features a 4-foot-by-6-foot chocolate “dirt’ cake, complete with gummy worms and chunks of cookie.More than 600 people have signed up so far to swing hammers, cook meals and run equipment to help build the 10,000-square-foot community playground during five days in May. The groundbreaking ceremony is a good chance for people to learn more and to view design plans for the playground, which will be staked out at Freedom Park, said Theresa Metzger of the Stanwood Camano Area Foundation. The afternoon also includes activities for kids. The custom-designed playground is to include a Viking ship, covered areas and lots of climbing, sliding and swinging equipment. The foundation is spearheading efforts to finish raising the money needed to build the $200,000 playground. The effort is about $30,000 shy of that goal. Construction tools and an estimated 150 more volunteers are needed for the barn-raising style construction project, Metzger said. To help out, people can pay $35 to have a name or message engraved on one of the pickets of the new fence that will surround the playground, she said. Construction days are May 19 through 23.
