Warriors dominate district invite

Edmonds-Woodway overwhelmed the competition at the Edmonds District Invite.

The Warriors coasted to an easy victory, outdistancing the second-place team by 343 points in the seven-team boys swimming meet Jan. 30 at Shoreline Pool.

The Warriors won 10 of 11 events to score 490 points. Mountlake Terrace had its strongest showing in years with a second place finish and 147 points. Lynnwood took third with 119 and Meadowdale was fifth with 90.

Edmonds-Woodway appears to be in good shape for districts. The goal at the beginning of the season was to have a full lineup in the postseason.

“We can have four spots in each individual event,” said coach Kate Trettevik. “So far we have all but four filled and it's looking pretty good for the JV to have four of those guys to move up for districts. So that goal of having filled all the spots for Edmonds-Woodway is really close.”

The Warriors' were led by Peter Doolittle, who won the 100 butterfly (57.96 seconds) and the 100 backstroke (1:00.38). He also swam on the winning 200 medley relay team along with Michael Hsu, Andy Cook and Thomas Ernst (1:51.92) and the 400 freestyle relay squad with Michael Lesaca, Peter Chong nd Hsu (3:42.84).

Doolittle's times in the 100 butterfly and 100 backstroke were both his season's best.

Teammate Kellen Jay won the 200 freestyle (2:04.80) and the 500 freestyle (5:45.35). Thomas Ernst captured the 50 freestyle (23.81) and the 100 freestyle (52.59). Michael Lesaca won the 200 individual medley (2:17.68). The Warriors completed a sweep of the relays with a win in the 200 freestyle with Andy Cook, Blaine Luikko, Chong and Ernst (1:37.17).

None of the Warriors have clocked in with a state cut yet but the significant drops in time by Doolittle and Chong in the 100 butterfly are good signs.

“Both Peters have a chance,” Trettevik said. “We haven't tapered them at all, so with the taper they might be able to drop time for that.”

The 200 medley and 200 freestyle relays also are state contenders either through time or perhaps a wildcard entry at districts, Trettevik added.

Mountlake Terrace's lone victory was turned in by Franco Yip in the 100 breaststroke (1:06.33).

“He's been working on that,” said Trettevik, who also is the Hawks coach. “He's hoping to get state times. He's got to cut about three seconds at districts.”

Another prospect for the Hawks is Evan Nebel in the 50 and 100 freestyles.

Even with one of the smaller teams in the league, Mountlake Terrace won four dual meets this season and is looking to improve its standing at the district meet.

The 4A district meet is scheduled for Feb. 11-13 at Kamiak High School.
