Reardon touts energy drink in online video

The athletic-looking pitchman giving the on-camera testimonial about the organic energy drink isn't a pro football player.

He isn't a Top 40 musician or a Hollywood actor either.

He's Snohomish County Executive Aaron Reardon.

A short YouTube video posted in June shows Reardon touting the benefits of an energy drink made by Bellevue-based Sea2o Inc. Reardon, flanked by U.S., Washington state and Snohomish County flags, extols what he considers to be the health benefits of the antioxidant-rich beverage.

“It's a testimonial to the lifestyle that I lead and why I use the product,” Reardon said on Tuesday. “It's a local company and of course I'm supporting my local companies over international companies.”

Reardon and a company representative said he did not get paid for the video. Despite being available for more than three months, the video appeared to have just 38 hits at one point early Tuesday afternoon.

The drink stands out because of its exotic ingredients, including seaweed and nectar from the agave plant, according to the manufacturer. Reardon said he learned about the drink last year after arriving to a speech out of breath fresh from a workout. The company's owner, who was also there, recommended he try it. He's been using the product ever since after regular workouts that have helped him shed 40 pounds and keep the weight off, Reardon said.

“I work out and I eat right,” he said. “Most of those products are not just expensive, they're loaded with sugar, caffeine and a product called taurine, which are not good for you at all.”

He said he chooses his endorsements carefully, whether in support of another political candidate or a charity.

The drink company, whose name is a play on Seattle and seaweed, started in 2006, sales manager Greg Cunningham said. It was one of several businesses Reardon hosted at a May summit at the Lynnwood Convention Center.

“He keeps very fit and obviously is a very busy person,” Cunningham said.
