August offers a number of free and almost free local movie series for families

School’s out and summer blockbusters abound this summer, as does the summer heat, but a trip to the movie theater on a weekly basis can get pricey when kids are in tow. Here are some locally sponsored movie series’ that offer families free (and almost free) entertainment.

Edmonds Outdoor Movie Nites

Dusk, Fridays: Bring your family, a blanket or lawn chairs to watch a blockbuster hit outside on a giant inflatable screen at the Frances Anderson Center Playfield, 700 Main St., Edmonds. Admission: Free. Refreshments will be sold. Info: Edmonds Parks & Rec, 425-771-0230.

Cool Films/Hot Summer Nights

Ÿ 4 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 19, Twilight (PG-13). Teens can wear a costume or “Twilight” clothing for a chance to win the DVD.

Cinema Under the Stars

Ÿ Aug. 14 - Wallace and Gromit in the Curse of the Were-Rabbit (G); preshow entertainment with creative arts and crafts projects.

Ÿ Aug. 21 - Bolt (PG); preshow entertainment with magician Louie Foxx.

Anime on an August Afternoon

3:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 11, Lake Forest Park Library, 17171 Bothell Way NE, invites teens ages 12-18 to come in costume and vote for their favorite of several anime episodes to be screened in the Third Place Commons Meeting Room. Admission: Free. Info: 206-362-8860.

AMC Summer MovieCamp

10 a.m. Wednesdays, movie theatre chain AMC is offering a specially priced series for families, with admission & concession proceeds, excluding taxes and operating costs, benefitting Variety - The Children’s Charity and the Will Rogers Institute. Locally, AMC Loews Alderwood Mall 16, 18733 33rd Ave. W., Lynnwood, plays host to the series. Admission: $1 per person, with specially priced concession deals. Sensory Friendly Film Series

10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 1, the Autism Society and AMC Entertainment host a special screening of “G-Force” locally at the AMC Woodinville 12, 17640 Garden Way NE, Woodinville. This unique program is designed specifically for family members with sensory challenges -- the movie auditorium will have its lights brought up and the sound turned down, families will be able to bring in their own gluten-free, casein-free snacks, and no previews or advertisements will be shown before the movie. The social boundaries of movie theatre etiquette, such as not talking during the film or sitting still through most of the show, will also be relaxed for this event.
