Incumbents seek election to school board

Edmonds School Board members Ann McMurray and Susan Phillips have announced their candidacies for their respective board positions for the Aug. 18 primary.

McMurray, a Mountlake Terrace resident and the current president of the school board, has served on the board for five years and is running for director in district 2.

Phillips, an Edmonds resident and the current vice president of the school board, has served on the board for 1-1/2 years and is running for director in district 4.

All voters registered within the Edmonds School District boundaries are eligible to vote for all director positions.

McMurray, an operations manager for a local mental health and chemical dependency counseling agency, has been active in the Edmonds School District for 20 years as a parent volunteer, parent club and booster club president, and a member of the Citizen Planning Committee for 15 years, according to a press release. Her children graduated from Edmonds schools. She said she strongly supports the district putting in an articulated math curriculum and putting a renewed emphasis on literacy education across all grade levels. Facing increasingly tight finances, she said she is committed to finding commonsense solutions to difficult budget issues.

Phillips has been involved with the Edmonds School District for the past 10 years, volunteering with PTA and parent clubs. She currently serves as treasurer for the College Place Middle School parent club. She has been active with Citizens for Schools, a non-profit political action committee that helps pass district levies and bonds, and has volunteered with the Citizens Planning Committee.

In a press release, Phillips said she supports new math curriculum and standardization across all grade levels and works with lawmakers on the issue of fully funding schools.

Phillips, who teaches at Edmonds Community College in the hospitality and tourism department, has children who attend middle and high school in the Edmonds School District.
