Shorewood clinches softball playoff berth

Shorewood clinched a 4A District 1 softball playoff berth with its 5-3 win over Kamiak April 29, although it came in quite an unconventional way.

Shorewood, behind 2-0, scored three runs on zero hits and three Kamiak errors in the sixth inning for its first runs of the game and a 3-2 lead.

Kamiak came back at Shorewood, as Ashlee Nelson hit a double to advance Teddi McFall to third base. With Mackenzie Meier pinch-running for McFall. Meier scored on a passed ball to tie the score at 3-3.

In the seventh inning, Shorewood broke up Kim Kocik's no-hit bid, with Ali Hascall singling in Alicia Nishimura for a 4-3 lead. Shorewood scored once more, and Olivia Jacobs was able to close the door on Kamiak, finishing with seven strikeouts and two walks.

"Kocik pitched a great game without a doubt," Kamiak head coach Bill Bowker said of Kocik's two-hit, eight strikeouts effort. "Its a little on the unusual side to have a no-hitter and have the game tied at 3-3 ... Shorecrest played solid defense and the times we had a chance, they didn't make an error."

Kocik gave Kamiak an early advantage in the bottom of the third with a two-run triple.
