Shorewood's African art on display

Shorewood High School is hosting its annual African Art Show from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, May 14 at Third Place Books in Lake Forest Park.

Teahcers selected the best student-made African art pieces and performances which will be showcased.

LFP student wins contest

Robert Wang, 15, of Lake Forest Park, a student at Northwest School in Seattle, was one of four winners in the C. Keith Birkenfeld Composition Contest hosted by the Bellevue Youth Symphony Orchestra.

Wang's work will premiere with the flute orchestra on May 11 at The Meydenbauer Center.

"I wrote a very simple piece based off of the sounds of cicadas in northern New Zealand," Wang said. "After I came back from my trip I was inspired to incorporate the constant sounds of their chirp."

The original version of the piece is for piano.

"Comparatively to my other pieces it took very little time to compose, less than a week," he said. "It is very simple harmonically, staying in only one key the whole time, although it does use cluster chords often. The biggest challenge in writing this piece was orchestrating it for flute choir. I am not a flutist myself and had to get lots of advice on flute writing."

Student caddies win scholarships

Shoreline residents John Freitag, a senior at Shorecrest, and Maria Tulloch, a senior at Shorewood have won full-tuition Chick Evans Caddie Scholarships to attend the University of Washington.

Both are caddies at Seattle Golf Club.

Evans Scholars are golf caddies who are selected on four criteria: a strong caddie record, excellent academics, demonstrated financial need and outstanding character.

The scholarship is renewable for up to four years. The Western Golf Association, headquartered in Golf, Illinois, has administered the Chick Evans Scholarship program through the Evans Scholars Foundation since its inception in 1930. It is the nation's largest privately funded scholarship program.

Currently, 845 caddies are enrolled in colleges across the nation as Evans Scholars, including 19 at the University of Washington and six at Washington State.
