Local boy Scout earns Eagle rank
Colin Eoff, 14, was presented the rank of Eagle Scout at a court of honor held on April 18 at First Lutheran Church of Richmond Beach. The Eagle Scout rank is the highest rank awarded by the Boy Scouts of America and only two percent of all boys who join scouting are successful in reaching this goal.
Eoff is a member of Boy Scout Troop 325 of Richmond Beach whose sponsoring organization is the First Lutheran Church of Richmond Beach. Colin's parents are Fred Eoff and Elaine Essensa of Shoreline.
Boy Scouts must earn the Eagle Scout rank prior to their 18th birthday. Reaching the pinnacle of scouting at the age of 14 is a rare accomplishment. In earning the coveted Eagle Scout rank Eoff earned 21 merit badges covering an array of subjects ranging from outdoor skills to citizenship and financial management. He completed National Youth Leadership Training in 2008, has served as a patrol leader, and currently leads Troop 325 as its Senior Patrol Leader.
He has performed 107 hours of various forms of community service including his Eagle Scout project which involved the design and construction management of a cedar enclosure providing security and screening of refuse and recycling binds at First Lutheran Church of Richmond Beach. Other notable special awards include the Historic Trails Award and recognition for completion of 3 separate weeklong outdoor treks exceeding 50 miles.
Embrace Shoreline Schools
In the spring of 2008, a group of faith-based organizations in Shoreline and Lake Forest Park led by Pastor Steve Ulmer of New Hope-Seattle wanted to find a way to serve the community.
Spearheaded by Pastor Ulmer's efforts, each Shoreline/Lake Forest Park school was paired with a local church. Area neighborhood associations, service club members, and PTSA members joined them out in the rain and drizzle, cleaning up and weeding the school grounds.
Now it's time to do it again.
The next Embrace Shoreline Schools (ESS) landscaping effort is scheduled for 9 a.m. to noon on May 16.
Participants are welcome to join with the area's PTAs, faith communities and neighborhoods to work on volunteer projects at the District's schools on that day. Projects may include such tasks as gardening and maintenance, pruning, weeding, and other needs identified by the schools themselves. Please bring your own hand tools and gloves.
For a complete list of contacts, visit www.embraceshorelineschools.org.
This year, ESS will also team with the Back to School Consortium, encouraging the community to bring donations of new backpacks that will be filled with school supplies and distributed to students in need in August.
The annual Shoreline Back-To-School event provides school supplies, hair cuts, and clothing assistance to Shoreline School District families with a low income and/or circumstances that make it challenging to adequately prepare their children for school. In 2008, more than 650 backpacks filled with school supplies were distributed.
This year's Back to School event takes place Saturday, Aug. 29 at Ridgecrest Elementary. For more information, visit www.btsconsortium.org.
Band performs at the Commons
Songwriter Ian McFeron will celebrate the release of his fifth full-length LP, "Love Me Blue" at the Third Place Commons in Lake Forest Park at 7:30 p.m. on May 1.
With shows scheduled from Bellingham to San Diego, and an even larger tour ahead this fall through Colorado, New Mexico, Texas, and beyond, McFeron and his band will take a moment to perform a free, all-ages, kid-friendly show in their own neighborhood.
"We bought a bus and have been out on the road pretty solid since fall of 2007," McFeron said in press release. "But there's nothing like celebrating a new record in your hometown with the friends and fans that have supported you from the beginning."
In the live performance, McFeron will be joined by Alisa Milner on fiddle, Norman Baker on bass, and Mark Bateman on drums.
"I wanted to create something that sounded like Seattle feels - a little bit melancholy and morose, but still warm and sincere," said 27-year old McFeron about his latest release. "I wanted it to have that Springtime Northwest feel - like when we all crawl out of our winter caves and see the sun breaking through the clouds and we realize that we're on the other side of the darkness -that we made it through."
