Firefighters commend quick action by neighbor in Shoreline apartment fire
Enterprise staff
A quick thinking citizen prevented an elderly female and her son from losing their apartment to fire on April 23.
Matt Kennedy, a resident on 14th Avenue NE in Shoreline, noticed smoke billowing from a nearby apartment at about 7:30 p.m. The woman and her son occupying the apartmen had evacuated safely but were unsure of what to do next. They told Kennedy they had a fire in their kitchen, and that they had called 9-1-1.
Kennedy grabbed a fire extinguisher from the wall just outside his apartment and carefully approached their apartment, staying low under the smoke. He doused the fire, which was quickly spreading from a toaster to the cabinets, walls and curtains.
Firefighters arrived to find the blaze under control, and damages were significantly reduced due to Kennedy's actions.
Fire investigators believe the fire was caused by an electrical problem in the toaster.
"If it hadn't been for Matt's actions, this family could have lost everything inside the apartment", said Shoreline Fire Lieutenant Rod Bush. "Matt should be commended for getting involved and for acting in a safe manner while doing so."
