Losing librarians would hurt students
The disturbing March 25 headline, “Schools brace for budget pain,” prompts me to write to encourage all Edmonds’ citizens to learn about the decisions facing local school boards as they ponder the pending budget shortfall.
In Edmonds District, a proposed plan includes cutting to half time the librarian position in four elementary schools. Not giving equal access to information, technology and literature to all students is unacceptable and unfair. Half-time librarians at targeted schools will have no time to co-teach with classroom teachers, help teachers integrate technology into lessons, promote reading skills and the love of it and to raise funds for libraries with book fairs. Librarians are vital to the educational system and an integral part of all our schools. Four libraries closed for half of the week deny too many children the benefits that others will continue to enjoy. Please voice your concerns to our school board members, district administrators and state legislators.
