District debate team wins awards

District debate team wins awards

The Edmonds School District's Speech and Debate Team participated in the Gig Harbor High School Invitational competition Oct. 24-25 and won several awards.

Michelle Herman won Superior Awards in Open Dramatic Interpretation and Open Impromptu. Herman earned first place in all of her speech rounds and was awarded the second place Student Choice Award in the Student Senate.

Henry Apfel and Alex Simpson won a Superior Award for Open Duo Interpretation. Apfel and Simpson are the reigning state champions in the event.

Laura Blythe won the best debate record at the tournament, winning three of five Novice Lincoln-Douglas rounds. Blythe also competed in Novice Extemporaneous Speaking.

Ali Al-Sadi competed in Open Lincoln-Douglas and Open Extemporaneous.

Marian Lewis competed in Novice Expository Speaking. Josh Froebe competed in Novice Extemporaneous and Nick Ekern competed in Novice Impromptu. In addition, Froebe and Ekern participated in Public Forum Debate.

All students in the district are welcome to join the team. Practices are 2-5 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday at the Edmonds Homeschool Resource Center.

Brighton School open house

Brighton School will have an open house from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Nov. 15 at the school, 6717 212th St. SW in Lynnwood. Brighton is a private school which serves preschool through eighth grade students.

District wins grants from businesses

The Edmonds School District has won grants from The Boeing Co. and Washington Mutual. Boeing will give $30,000 for teachers in kindergarten through sixth grades for professional development in the physical and earth sciences.

Washington Mutual will support "job embedded" professional development so teachers can observe their peers in action during the regular school day and receive coaching for their own work in the classroom. The $7,500 grant from Washington Mutual supports that program for eight teachers at Spruce and College Place elementary schools.



School psychologist wins award

The Washington Association of School Psychologists awarded Cathy Lamson, school psychologist at Hazelwood Elementary, with the "Best Practices in Intervention Award."

Lamson is a 20-year Edmonds School District veteran.

The "School Psychology Services Award" was accepted by director Jo Callaghan on behalf of the district's team of school psychologists and counselors for exemplary support of best practices in school psychology service delivery.

EdCC students blog about service

Students in Edmonds Community College's service-learning program contribute 30,000 hours of volunteer service to 57 community organizations each year. Now they are sharing their experiences on the college's blog, AfterWords, at www.edcc.edu/afterwords.

Student Yin Yu, who organizes events for the college's Center for Service-Learning, is one blogger on AfterWords. She writes about service-learning projects and sustainability as she completes her associate of science degree. An Edmonds Community College Foundation scholarship recipient, Yu plans to go on to study environmental science at the University of Washington Bothell.

Lisa Quirk, a student working on her associate of arts degree on her way to the University of Washington to study anthropology, will also be a regular contributor to the blog.

Both bloggers are active members of the college club S.A.V.E. (Students Association for a Viable Environment) and alumnae of the Learn-and-serve Environmental Anthropology Field (LEAF) school -- a series of three human ecology classes with a service-learning emphasis.
