Lack of execution sinks Mountlake Terrace

Mountlake Terrace went toe to toe with the league champs but couldn't make the plays.
Jackson defeated the Hawks 17-0 and claimed the Western Conference 4A South Division football championship Oct. 24 at Edmonds Stadium.
The Wolfpack win, coupled with Edmonds-Woodway's 48-20 victory over Cascade, gave Jackson its second-ever league title in school history.
"Wesco champs. It feels good," said Jackson coach Joel Vincent. "I wish we would have come out and had a little bit of a stronger performance tonight, but our kids bucked up when they had to. They made plays when they had to. This was kind of an anomaly for us tonight. It wasn't our best game."
Jackson (5-0 in the league, 7-1 overall) clinched the South Division's No. 1 seed, while Edmonds-Woodway and Mariner claimed the two other berths.
Mountlake Terrace has played all three teams and coach Tony Umayam said that as far as he's concerned the Timberwolves are the most potent offensive team in the league.
"They have a lot of weapons," Umayam said. "I'm pleased with the way our defense was able to play against them … they did a nice job of making the big plays."
Interceptions by Taylor Mead and Anthony Mortera led to Jackson's first 10 points. Senior running back Taylor Cox scored on a 2-yard run in the first quarter and then Daniel Sullivan kicked 34-yard field goal to give the Wolfpack a 10-0 lead at halftime.
"We lost the turnover battle," Umayam said. "It's hard to win games when you turn the ball over as many times as we did and we didn't create as many turnovers as we probably should have."
Mountlake Terrace (1-4, 3-5) had a couple of opportunities to put some points on the board but failed. On their second drive of the game, the Hawks moved the ball down to the Jackson 32 but were unable to convert on a fourth-and-1 and turned the ball over on downs.
In the second quarter, Mountlake Terrace took the ball from its own 26 and advanced the ball to the Jackson 3, but the Hawks could not score on fourth-and-goal .
"If we could have gotten a score it would have done wonders and turned the momentum a little bit our way," Umayam said. "Those non-conversion plays of those four and third and short, those are big momentum killers."
Mountlake Terrace had another fourth-and-1 situation in the third quarter and was prepared to go for it but a false start penalty forced Umayam to send out the punt unit.
Jackson missed a field goal in the third quarter but then finally put the game out of reach when Cox scored on a 5-yard run with 4:52 left in the game.
Vincent was complimentary of the Hawks' efforts.
"Tony should be proud of those kids," Vincent said. "Those kids came ready to play. … They went toe to toe with us for four quarters." Hawks fall to Wolfpack
