Mountlake Terrace clips Shorewood 14-0

Junior running back Ellersick scores two touchdowns

The message was clear at halftime from Mountlake Terrace coach Tony Umayam.

After a disappointing first half, the Mountlake Terrace offensive line needed to refocus and come out strong in the third and fourth quarters.

The Hawks responded as junior running back Casey Ellersick took advantage of some solid blocking to score a pair of touchdowns to lead Mountlake Terrace to a 14-0 victory over Shorewood in a Western Conference South Division football game Oct. 10 at Shoreline Stadium.

"They just came out ready to play in the second half," Umayam said of his offensive line. "We knew that if we were going to come out with a win, we needed to raise our level of play up front. ... They opened some holes and Casey did a nice job of running the ball."

Ellersick scored on 1-yard run in the third quarter and then added a 7-yard run in the fourth on a drive that lasted almost the entire quarter. Mountlake Terrace converted on two fourth-down plays during that drive.

"Nick Deller and Jacob Champoux made nice catches to keep the drive going," Umayam said. "That last scoring drive was 11 minutes. That's when you know you're converting on some key third and fourth downs and not having too many negative plays."

Ellersick finished with 151 yards on 25 carries with most of those yards coming in the second half.

"It took a little while to get going," Umayam said. "We were fortunate to come out in the second half and establish what we wanted to do -- to run the football. We counted on the offensive line to carry us in the second half."

The Mountlake Terrace defense produced its first shutout of the year, though it was far from a perfect effort in Umayam's opinion.

"Shorewood was still able to move the ball on us periodically," he said. "They got pretty close (to scoring) in the second half and luckily we were able to come out there without giving up any points. It was a matter that (our defense) was able to make some critical plays when we needed to. I still think we can play significantly better defensively."

The Hawks (1-2 in the league, 3-3 overall) played their third full game without senior Billy Lechtenberg and their fourth game without senior wide receiver Paul Clingan, who likely is out for the rest of the season.

"We've played a lot of youth on both sides of the ball," Umayam said. "They're just expected to play at this level. So far we have three wins. That's a nice step."
