BIKES accepts grant requests

BIKES Club of Snohomish County, a nonprofit recreational bicycle club, is accepting grant requests.

Snohomish County organizations that support recreational bicycling and bike safety for children or adults are eligible. Previous grants have ranged up to $1,000 and have supported children's bike helmets, bike racks and bicycles for low-income youth.

Requests must include a description of the project and the anticipated number of people the project is expected to affect. Include the full name and address of the organization requesting the grant and a contact name, e-mail address and telephone number.

Mail-in grant requests should be postmarked by Nov. 6. E-mail requests are due Nov. 10.

Submit requests to president@bikesclub.org or BIKES, P.O. Box 5242, Everett, WA 98206. Grants will be awarded by Nov. 20.

Jackson Visitor Center is open

Visitors may now enjoy the new $21.2 million Henry M. Jackson Memorial Visitor Center. It opened Sunday at Mount Rainier.

Meet sheriff tonight on Camano

Island County Sheriff Mark Brown plans a community outreach meeting at 7 tonight at Camano Senior and Community Center, 606 Arrowhead Road.

Brown's topic is the future of the Island County Sheriff's Office.

He plans to discuss the needs of the community in terms of categorizing the calls to the 911 center and how they translate into priority law enforcement responses. Those who attend can give input on what they think is important for Camano Island.

Correction

A state initiative that would open up carpool lanes to all traffic in nonpeak hours is numbered I-985. A story on page B1 Monday gave an incorrect number for the Tim Eyman-sponsored initiative.
