Prep swimming: Snohomish hands Marysville-Pilchuck its first dual-meet defeat

MARYSVILLE -- The Snohomish Panthers handed previously unbeaten Marysville-Pilchuck its first girls swimming loss of the season with a 95-88 victory at the M-P pool Thursday.

Snohomish's Emily Ferreira won the 200-yard individual medley, the 100 breaststroke and swam legs on Snohomish's 200 medley relay and 400 freestyle relays -- all in state qualifying times -- to lead the Panthers, who remained unbeaten in Wesco North action this season.

"I would like to give kudos to (Snohomish)," M-P coach Jackie LeGore Hodgins said. "They swam phenomenally."

Ferreira's freshman teammate, Madelene K. Baker won the 50 freestyle and the 100 freestyle -- the latter in state qualifying time -- and joined Ferrira on the 200 medley and 400 freestyle relays.

The Panthers recorded state-qualifying times in five events, negating a strong effort from M-P's Kendall Vincelette. The Tomahawks freshman won the 100 butterfly in a state-qualifying time of 1 minute, 1.04 seconds and swam a leg on the Tomahawks' winning 200 freestyle relay. She also teamed with Kami Girard, Megan Shoemaker and Jewel LeValley to record a state qualifying time of 3:47.89 with a second-place finish in the 400 freestyle relay. The 400 freestyle relay time broke the M-P school record.

LeValley added a victory in the 200 freestyle (2:03.04) and Girard won the 100 backstroke (1:03.57). Melinda Blomberg won the 500 freestyle (5:44.78) and Sarah Clark won the diving competition (236.00 points) to lead the Tomahawks.

"It was a great meet," Hodgins said. "We all brought the best out in each other."

With the loss, the Tomahawks fall to third place in the Wesco North standings. Snohomish moves into first place, tied with Jackson atop the Wesco North standings.
