Cascade pounds Terrace
Hawks unable to slow Bruins running back Frye in 30-7 defeat
By Al Rose For The Enterprise
EDMONDS
Cascade's Aaron Frye can pass but his role this season is as a running back.
The Mountlake Terrace Hawks found that out the hard way as the 6-foot-2, 195-pound junior was unstoppable, rushing for 297 yards, including an 85-yard touchdown run, as the Bruins won 30-7 in a Western Conference 4A South Division game Oct. 3 at Edmonds Stadium.
The Hawks had no answer for Frye. Behind an aggressive offensive line he scored four touchdowns, the first one on a 1-yard yard plunge midway through the first quarter. A 2-point conversion from Frye to Jordan Duffy gave the Bruins an 8-0 lead.
Cascade (2-1 in the league, 3-2 overall) scored their second touchdown on a 15-yard run by Frye. After Casey Wiedmere converted they stretched their lead to 15-0.
The Hawks got their lone score on a Casey Ellersick 8-yard run midway through the second quarter. Chaz Dalton kicked the extra point, which concluded the Hawks scoring for the night.
Mountlake Terrace (0-2, 2-3) appeared to be gaining some momentum late in the second quarter but was stopped short of a first down in Bruin territory. After that it was all Cascade.
LaQuondis Bruce reached the end zone on a 3-yard plunge in the third quarter. Frye saved his best for last, an 85-yard run, the Bruins' final touchdown. Both teams were scoreless in the fourth quarter but the game was decided long before that.
Cascade coach Jake Huizinga, while pleased with the victory said that "we weren't satisfied with our first half lead and we let our players know it. They responded well. While Frye had a great game let me emphasize that this was a team effort".
Huizinga added that "we used this game as a stepping stone to the playoffs. While we did well we want to continue to improve in order to be ready when the time comes."
He also singled out Nick Morley whose punting kept the Hawks deep in their own territory. One of his kicks was for 61 yards.
For Mountlake Terrace, it was their second disappointing loss in two weeks.
"We didn't execute on offense and should have been more disciplined on defense. When you play an athletic team like Cascade, it is vital that you do these things" said coach Tony Umayam. "I was disappointed that we did such a bad job on third down situations".
As for Frye, Umayam knew "He's a very good athlete. Last year he was a quarterback and this year we found out he is a very good running back".
As for the future Umayam said "We are a young team and we'll continue to build and grow. Right now our immediate goal is to bring our record up to .500 by winning our next game."
HALL OF FAME: Former Mountlake Terrace soccer coach Pete Frey and former player Dana Garner were inducted into the Mountlake Terarce High School Athletics Hall of Fame. Frey was the first coach to bring home a state championship in 1975. He also was the first soccer coach at the high school. After his coaching stint (1975-76) Frey went on to coach soccer at Sehome High School for more than 20 years.
Garner is the all-time goal scorer for the Hawks boys soccer program. He was the team MVP in 1995 and 1996. Garner later went on to play for Seattle Pacific and was drafted by the Vancouver Whitcaps professional soccer team in 2001.
