Prep Games of the Week

Here we go into the meat of the schedule. A pair of key league matchups highlight the lineup in week 6.

The impressive Mariner team, which is 3-0 in the Western Conference South Division, is at Edmonds-Woodway, which is 1-1. Edmonds-Woodway needs a win to keep its league title hopes alive.

In the other key league matchup, Shorecrest is at Meadowdale, in a game that could be instrumental in determining who wins the Wesco 3A League. Meadowdale was the preseason favorite with Shorecrest picked second.

Shorecrest beat Wesco North powerhouse Snohomish earlier in the season but was blown out by Sedro-Woolley last week. Meadowdale is favored but depending on what Shorecrest team shows up the Mavericks could have a battle on their hands.

Lynnwood will look to try and secure its first victory of the season against a tough Glacier Peak squad.

Jackson at Kamiak

Game time: 7 p.m., Friday, Oct. 10 at Goddard Stadium.

Records: Jackson (2-0 in the league, 4-1 overall), Kamiak (1-2, 1-4).

Last year's result: Kamiak 38, Jackson 35.

Last week's results: Jackson 50, Lake Stevens 49; Edmonds-Woodway 12, Kamiak 0.

Players to watch: Jackson possesses probably the most talented backfield in the league with junior quarterback Andy Gay and running backs Taylor Cox and Riley Carr. Cox rushed for 174 yards and scored three touchdowns against Lake Stevens. Carr ran for two touchdowns and scored the game-winning 2-point conversion. Gay threw a pair of touchdown passes to John Wilde. Kamiak's offense is led by quarterback Sam Ruppel and running back Marcel Seely.

Breakdown: Jackson has stepped up its game and the results have be especially satisfying to coach Joel Vincent as the Wolfpack have knocked off Edmonds-Woodway and Lake Stevens in back-to-back games. The Timberwolves can use either Cox or Carr in the backfield or go to the air with Gay. Look for the Timberwolves to extend their win streak to three against a Kamiak team that only has won one of its five games.

Enterprise pick: Jackson 35, Kamiak 7.

Lakewood at Archbishop Murphy

Game time: 7 p.m., Friday, Oct. 10 at Terry Ennis Stadium.

Records: Lakewood (1-2 in the league, 1-4 overall), Archbishop Murphy (3-0, 5-0).

Last year's result: Archbishop Murphy 47, Lakewood 20.

Last week's results: Granite Falls 30, Lakewood 15; Archbishop Murphy 34, Coupeville 0.

Players to watch: Lakewood is led by quarterback Justin Lane, who completed 10-of-23 passes for 98 yards in the loss to Granite Falls. Archbishop Murphy's Randy Gordan ran 141 yards on nine carries and scored two touchdowns, while J.D. Melton caught a touchdown and then returned an interception for a touchdown for the Wildcats.

Breakdown: Archbishop Murphy chose to focus on the ground game last week, rushing for 268 yards on 43 carrries. But the Wildcats also completed five passes for 94 yards. Under first-year coach Dave Ward, Archbishop Murphy is comfortable running or throwing. Ward does want the Wildcats to continue to develop their passing game.

Enterprise pick: Archbishop Murphy 35, Lakewood 7.

Mariner at

Edmonds-Woodway

Game time: 8 p.m., Friday, Oct. 10 at Edmonds Stadium.

Records: Mariner (3-0 in the league, 4-1 overall), Edmonds-Woodway (1-1, 3-2).

Last year's result: Edmonds-Woodway 54, Mariner 20.

Last week's results: Mariner 36, Shorewood 7; Edmonds-Woodway 12, Kamiak 0.

Players to watch: Mariner's Tevin Dillon caught three passes for 91 yards and two touchdowns against Shorewood. Edmonds-Woodway senior running back Tony Heard rushed for 171 yards on 23 carries and scoring two touchdowns against Kamiak.

Breakdown: Edmonds-Woodway, the four-time defending league champions, faces a key league game against first place Mariner. A loss would mean that the Warriors would have two league defeats, while Mariner would be undefeated in league. Jackson, currently the only other undefeated team in the league, already has beaten the Warriors. The health of Heard, who's been battling a leg injury, will be of prime importance to Edmonds-Woodway on both sides of the ball. The Warriors will want to control the ball to keep the high-powered Mariner offense off the field.

Enterprise pick: Edmonds-Woodway 21, Mariner 14.

Shorecrest at Meadowdale

Game time: 5 p.m., Friday, Oct. 10 at Edmonds Stadium.

Records: Shorecrest (0-0 in the league, 2-3 overall), Meadowdale (1-0, 3-1).

Last year's result: Meadowdale 7, Shorecrest 0.

Last week's results: Sedro-Woolley 43, Shorecrest 14; Meadowdale 34, Glacier Peak 21.

Players to watch: Meadowdale junior running back Naji Moore-Taylor put on a show against Glacier Peak, running for 266 yards and scoring all five of the Mavericks' touchdowns. The Mavericks also have an experienced quarterback in senior Matt McDonagh. Shorecrest's one-two punch out of the backfield are juniors Michael Harris and Jordan Brown while Sam Heck fills the quarterback slot.

Breakdown: The Meadowdale offense seems to be found its groove with the return of Moore-Taylor, who's scored eight touchdowns in the last two games. Teams are having trouble dealing with Moore-Taylor's speed as he has rushed for touchdowns 63 and 83 yards. If the Scots try to focus on him, then expect McDonagh to look for tight end Connor Hamlett.

Enterprise pick
: Meadowdale 21, Shorecrest 17.

Mountlake Terrace

at Shorewood

Game time: 7 p.m., Friday, Oct. 10 at Shoreline Stadium.

Records: Mountlake Terrace (0-2 in the league, 2-3 overall), Shorewood (0-3, 0-5).

Last year's result: Mountlake Terrace 35, Shorewood 0.

Last week's results: Cascade 30, Mountlake Terrace 7; Mariner 36, Shorewood 7.

Players to watch: Mountlake Terrace's lone touchdown was scoring by junior running back Casey Ellersick. The Hawks' offense is led by junior quarterback Brandon Eckhart. Shorewood's Dorian Lair led the T-birds with 59 yards rushing last week and quarterback Nathan Jeannot hooked up with receiver Luke Nelson on an 11-yard pass play.

Breakdown: One of the two teams at the bottom of the Western Conference 4A South Division will gain some momentum after Friday's contest. The Hawks have shown they have the talent to produce wins after beating Lynnwood and Meadowdale. Look for Ellersick to be the workhorse in the Hawks' offense. Injuries have shelved a number of Mountlake Terrace starters. Seniors Billy Lectenberg and Paul Clingan are not expected back this week.

Enterprise pick: Mountlake Terrace 24, Shorewood 14.

Lynnwood

at Glacier Peak

Game time: 7 p.m., Friday, Oct. 10 at Snohomish High School.

Records: Lynnwood (0-1 in the league, 0-5 overall); Glacier Peak (0-1, 1-4).

Last year's result: Did not play.

Last week's results: Everett 62, Lynnwood 7; Meadowdale 34, Glacier Peak 21.

Players to watch: Lynnwood senior running back Geoff Meinken rushed for a game-high 128 yards against Everett. Glacier Peak quarterback Zach Richter threw for 188 yards and two touchdowns in the loss to Meadowdale. Wide receiver Tanner Southard caught seven pass for 97 yards.

Breakdown: Lynnwood coach Dorian Manza is looking for a crisper start this week after last week's disappointment against Everett. Manza is looking to simplify the offense. Meinken is a solid running back and gives the Royals a chance to control the ball if they can control the line of scrimmage. Glacier Peak is continually improving and battled highly regarded Meadowdale tough last week.

Enterprise pick: Glacier Peak 27, Lynnwood 20.

King's at South Whidbey

Game time: 7 p.m.

Records: South Whidbey (3-0 in the league, 5-0 overall), King's (1-2, 3-2)

Last year's result: South Whidbey 44, King's 7

Last week's results: Cedarcrest 35, King's 21; South Whidbey 17, Sultan 7

Players to watch: Henry Mead led South Whidbey with 208 yards on 22 carries and scored on a 58-yard run against Sultan. Thomas Vincent passed for 267 yards and three touchdowns, including two to receiver Nick Swanson.

Breakdown: King's has droppped its last two conference games after starting 3-0 and the task might be even tougher against an experienced and undefeated South Whidbey team coached by ninth-year coach Mark Hodson. Hodson, who played at King's and graduated in 1986, has won the last two games but King's is "vastly improved" this year, he said. South Whidbey's offense breaks down about 70 percent run and 30 percent pass and operates mostly out of the I-formation.

Enterprise pick: South Whidbey 24, King's 21.
