Faces in the crowd: Kingma, Morton, Mosiman and McNeill

Posted at 11:50 am by Mike Cane, Herald Writer

This past weekend I participated in the Seattle Walk for Hope, a breast-cancer fundraiser and awareness event.

After finishing the 5-kilometer walk, I walked inside a building near the finish line at Magnuson Park and spotted several familiar faces. Among the hundreds of volunteers were members of the University of Washington women’s basketball team.

Suddenly I saw former local prep hoops stars left and right: Sarah Morton of Monroe High, Kristi Kingma (Jackson), Sara Mosiman (King’s) and Heidi McNeill (Oak Harbor). They were passing out free root beer floats to people who participated in the Walk for Hope.

I’m sure Morton, Kingma, Mosiman, McNeill and their teammates are working hard to get ready for the 2008-2009 season. But it’s refreshing to see that they take time to volunteer and do positive things in the community.

This was just one of many volunteer projects the Huskies have been involved in recently. Here’s an article about a summer mentorship program in which they helped Seattle-area teenage girls in foster care.

And check out this short article about McNeill’s summer internship. She worked at a horse-riding center in Woodinville that helps “improve the bodies, minds and spirits” of children and adults with disabilities.
