Pick your poison

Someone recently reminded me that if I were any good at predicting the outcome of sports events I would either live in Las Vegas or be rich and retired by now.
It’s true. At best, I’m average when it comes to guessing who will win any given game. But hey, it’s still fun to make predictions.
That reminds me: Here are my picks, along with the picks of Herald Prep Editor John McDonald and KRKO radio broadcaster Tom Lafferty, for tonight’s marquee prep football matchups:
*Jackson (3-1) at Lake Stevens (4-0) My pick: Lake Stevens 31-27 John McDonald's pick: Lake Stevens 35-14 Tom Lafferty's pick: Jackson 28-27
*Arlington (0-1, 3-1) at Marysville-Pilchuck (2-0, 4-0) My pick: M-P 21-14 J.M.’s pick: M-P 28-14 T.L.’s pick: M-P 35-14
*Meadowdale (0-0, 2-1) at Glacier Peak (0-0, 1-3) My pick: Meadowdale 35-28 J.M.’s pick: Meadowdale 21-15 T.L's pick: Meadowdale 44-22
*Kamiak (1-1, 1-3) at Edmonds-Woodway (0-1, 2-2) My pick: E-W 28-14 J.M.'s pick: E-W 21-7 T.L.'s pick: Kamiak 21-14
The title of this blog is “Pick your poison,” and here’s what I mean: Every Friday in the fall I cover a football game and more often than not the head coaches of both teams (and many players) saw who I picked to win in that day’s paper.
Once in awhile a coach playfully chides me for picking against his squad. It’s all in good fun. But I hope everyone realizes I don’t choose winners based on bias or personal allegiance — I grew up in Montana so I really don’t care who wins.
I just hope for a competitive, compelling game that people will want to read about. The result on the field is what everyone remembers, not the predictions.
Lucky for me.
