Warriors battle Knights

We were tempted to simply repeat last week's story about how unpredictable the 2008 prep football season is shaping up to be because we had more of the same.

How do you explain Mountlake Terrace pulling off one of the school's biggest upsets against Meadowdale two weeks ago and then losing last weekend to a school that didn't exist last year, Glacier Peak of Snohomish.

We can't.

The marquee match-up in week five pits what appear to be the two top teams in the Western Conference South and North divisions - Jackson and Lake Stevens.

Another intriguing game features an experienced Meadowdale squad against Glacier Peak. The Grizzlies knocked off Mountlake Terrace, which in turn beat the Mavericks the week before. But past results certainly are no indication of future performance.

King's looks to rebound after a tough loss to Lakewood, while the Archbishop Murphy express train looks to continue to bowl over its Cascade Conference competition.

Hold onto your hats because it looks like it's going to be a wild ride this season.

Kamiak at Edmonds-Woodway

Game time: 5 p.m., Friday, Oct. 3

Records: Kamiak 2-2, Edmonds-Woodway 2-2

Last year's result: Edmonds-Woodway 35, Kamiak 7

Last week's results: Meadowdale 28, Kamiak 7; Jackson 29, Edmonds-Woodway 25

Players to watch: Edmonds-Woodway's Tony Heard rushed for 142 yards and scored two touchdowns in the Warriors' loss to Jackson. Quarterback Andy Willcock completed 9 of 18 passes for 213 yards and one touchdown. Kamiak quarterback Sam Ruppel's 40-yard touchdown pass to Josh Glenn was Kamiak's lone touchdown against Meadowdale.

Breakdown: The Warriors look to even up their conference record at 1-1 against a Kamiak team that struggled to get anything going against a tough Meadowdale defense. An 0-2 start would be a difficult hole to dig out of for Edmonds-Woodway. Edmonds-Woodway's John Gradwohl and Kamiak's Dan Mack are two of the top coaches in the league. Gradwohl looks to have the edge in terms of talent this time around.

Enterprise pick: Edmonds-Woodway 30, Kamiak 10.

Lynnwood at Everett

Game time: 7 p.m., Friday, Oct. 3

Records: Lynnwood 0-4, Everett 3-1.

Last year's result: Did not play.

Last week's results: Mariner 49, Lynnwood 0; Everett 28, Cascade 8.

Players to watch: Lynnwood is led by senior quarterback Jared Shippey and senior running back Geoff Meinken. Everett quarterback Chase Herrick ran for two touchdowns and threw for another to lead the Seagulls past Cascade. Jake Frauenholtz returned four punts for 68 yards.

Breakdown: The league opener for both 3A teams looks on the surface to be a mismatch. The Royals need to get off to a good start in order to keep the high-flying Seagull offense grounded. Lynnwood's offense needs to execute better and have better blocking up front. The Royals' defense must find a way to contain Everett's speed.

Enterprise pick: Everett 37, Lynnwood 13.

Meadowdale at Glacier Peak

Game time: 7 p.m., Friday, Oct. 3

Records: Meadowdale 2-1, Glacier Peak 1-3.

Last year's result: Did not play.

Last week's results: Meadowdale 28, Kamiak 7; Glacier Peak 35, Mountlake Terrace 7.

Players to watch: Meadowdale's Naji Moore-Taylor rushed for 150 yards and three touchdowns in the victory over Kamiak. The Mavericks look to senior quarterback Matt McDonagh for veteran leadership. Glacier Peak quarterback Zach Richter threw for three touchdowns, including two to Luke Westburg.

Breakdown: On paper, it would appear that Glacier Peak, the first-year school in Snohomish, should be the favorite. The Grizzlies beat Mountlake Terrace, which beat Meadowdale a week earlier. But the Mavericks looked refocused and crisp in a decisive victory over Kamiak. Moore-Taylor came up big in his first game of the season. Mountlake Terrace coach Tony Umayam is interested to see how Meadowdale handles Glacier Peak's perimeter-oriented game and how the Grizzlies deal with the Mavericks' inside run game.

Enterprise pick: Meadowdale 24, Glacier Peak 7.

Cascade at Mountlake Terrace

Game time: 8 p.m., Friday, Oct. 3.

Records: Cascade 2-2, Mountlake Terrace 2-2.

Last year's result: Did not play.

Last week's results: Everett 28, Cascade 7; Glacier Peak 35, Mountlake Terrace 7.

Players to watch: Due to injuries to other players, Mountlake Terrace relies on junior running back Casey Ellersick, who rushed for more than 100 yards against Glacier Peak. Junior quarterback Brandyn Eckhart leads the offense. Cascade's offense has scored just one touchdown in its last two contests. Quarterback Aaron Frye leads a Bruin offense that is looking to regroup.

Breakdown: Both teams didn't fare well last week. The Hawks' will need big games out of Ellersick and Eckhart. Injuries have decimated the Hawks, who could be without Billy Lectenberg, Percy Anyimah and Paul Clingam, all key components of the offense. We're tempted to go with the Hawks as our upset special, but there are too many uncertainties in terms of who's healthy enough to go.

Enterprise pick: Cascade 35, Mountlake Terrace 20.

Shorewood at Mariner

Game time: 7 p.m.

Records: Mariner 3-1, Shorewood 0-4.

Last year's result: Mariner 52, Shorewood 7

Last week's results: Shorecrest 21, Shorewood 14; Mariner 49, Lynnwood 0.

Players to watch: Mariner's Adrien Black rushed for three touchdowns last week against Lynnwood, and finished with 110 yards on eight carries. Receiver Tevin Dillon caught two touchdowns and had 81 all-purpose yards with an interception. Shorewood's Dorian Lair is the Thunderbirds top player on offense and defense, but with defense dialed in on him, he shared the rushing load more last week with Danny Phan. Lair is a straight up the middle runner while the smaller, quicker Phan will try to pick his way and dart outside more. Receiver Luke Nelson returned last week from injury.

Breakdown: Mariner shut out Cascade two weeks ago and had no trouble with Lynnwood last week. "If you take away something they have three of four other answers," Shorewood coach Andrew Hershey said.

Shorewood expects to get six to 10 players back who have been ineligible, but they'll have to earn their spots back.

Enterprise pick: Mariner 42, Shorewood 7.

Sedro-Woolley at Shorecrest

Game time: 7 p.m.

Records: Shorecrest 2-2, Sedro-Woolley 1-3

Last year's result: Did not play.

Last week's results: Shorecrest 21, Shorewood 14; Sedro-Woolley 21, Anacortes 0.

Players to watch: Shorecrest's Michael Harris rushed for 146 yards and a touchdown last week while fellow running back Jordan Brown caught a touchdown pass and ran for another score. Sedro-Woolley quarterback Cody Pohren rushed 22 times for 96 yards and a touchdown and passed for another.

Breakdown: Sedro-Woolley won its first game last week against Anacortes while Shorecrest won a big rivalry game against Shorewood. The Scots' speedy backs, Brown and Harris, can hit the holes and the defense was tough in wins over Snohomish and Shorewood. Shorecrest should have the advantage at home if it takes care of the ball.

Enterprise pick: Shorecrest 28, Sedro-Woolley 20.

Cedarcrest at King's

Game time: 7 p.m.

Records: King's 3-1, Cedarcrest 2-2

Last year's result: Cedarcrest 34, King's 12; South Whidbey 22, Cedarcrest 14.

Last week's results: Lakewood 25, King's 22;

Players to watch: Senior halfback Darren Collinwood is Cedarcrest's horse in the Wing-T while junior quarterback Tommy Edwards throws some. King's quarterback Thomas Vincent accounts for 83 percent of the Knights rushing yards and has completed 37-of-60 passes for 489 yards this season. Vincent has seven touchdowns rushing and six passing with only one interception.

Breakdown: King's has forced 10 turnovers while giving up only one this season. Cedarcrest committed four turnovers which cost it dearly in a 22-14 loss to a good South Whidbey team. King's will probably need to win the turnover battle to beat Cedarcrest, which will try to regroup after last week's tough loss at home. Neither team is big on the offensive line, but Cedarcrest does have center Mike Gobier (6-2, 350) to run behind on a line that averages about 200 pounds and change.

Enterprise pick: Cedarcrest 27, King's 20.

Jackson at Lake Stevens

Game time: 7 p.m., Friday, Oct. 3.

Records: Jackson 3-1, Lake Stevens 4-0.

Last year's result: Did not play.

Last week's results: Jackson 29, Edmonds-Woodway 25; Lake Stevens 45, Arlington 23.

Players to watch: Jackson senior running back Taylor Cox is expected back after missing last week's game due to a sprained ankle. He'll join junior running back Riley Carr, who scored three touchdowns and ran for nearly 100 yards against Edmonds-Woodway. Junior quarterback Andy Gay showed poise in leading the Wolfpack on the winning drive late in the fourth quarter. Lake Stevens quarterback Nick Baker threw for 345 yards and three touchdown as the Vikings rallied from a 14-0 deficit against Arlington.

Breakdown: Jackson's thrilling win over Edmonds-Woodway was the biggest win for the Timberwolves in years. You have to wonder if there will be a letdown going up against non-league opponent Lake Stevens, who is undefeated. Lake Stevens also is coming off a big league victory over Arlington. The Vikings appear to be a slow-starting team. If Jackson can pounced on them early, they could pull out the win. The difference in the game could be the fact that it is being played at Lake Stevens.

Enterprise pick: Lake Stevens 35, Jackson 34.

Archbishop Murphy at Coupeville

Game time: 7 p.m., Friday, Oct. 3.

Records: Archbishop Murphy 4-0, Coupeville 0-4.

Last year's result: Archbishop Murphy 60, Coupeville 22.

Last week's results: Archbishop Murphy 49, Sultan 19; Granite Falls 35, Coupeville 7.

Players to watch: Archbishop Murphy quarterback Austin VanderWel threw for two touchdowns and Alex McClure ran for two touchdowns against Sultan. Coupeville running back Justin Adams ran for 87 yards on 22 carries.

Breakdown: Archbishop Murphy ran for 346 yards last week but also went to the air with good success. The Wildcat defense came up big with JD Melton picking off three interceptions, in addition to catching one on offense. Archbishop Murphy simply has too many offensive weapons and should be able to easily take care of Coupeville.

Enterprise pick: Archbishop Murphy 50, Coupeville 14.

Last week: 4-3.
