Mariner bounces Hawks

Mountlake Terrace stayed with Mariner for two and a half quarters.

But then the Marauders pulled away, outscoring the Hawks 28-6 en route to a 49-13 victory in a Western Conference South Division game Sept. 12 at Goddard Stadium.

"We ran into a pretty good football team," said Mountlake Terrace coach Tony Umayam. "We hung in there for about two and a half quarters. We couldn't get anything going offensively. That took the air out of the balloon and it was as a struggle all night to get anything consistent going offensively."

Trailing 12-0 after the first quarter, Mountlake Terrace junior quarterback Brandyn Eckhart connected on a 77-yard touchdown pass to senior flanker Billy Lechtenberg to cut the deficit to 12-7. The Marauders added a touchdown later in the period to head into halftime with a 21-7 advantage.

"We were able to come up with the big play," Umayam said. "Brandyn made a nice throw. Billy made a nice catch. He was able to turn on the speed at the end.

"We were competing fairly well going into halftime."

The Hawks (1-1) then blocked a Mariner punt and had the ball deep in Marauder territory but were unable to score any points.

"That was a real pivotal point of the game," Umayam said.

Mariner (1-1) responded with a pair of touchdowns in the third quarter and added two more in the fourth quarter. Mountlake Terrace's Martinez Johnson scored on a 3-yard run in the final period.

"We did not have a very good week in practice," Umayam said. "I stressed to (the players) that we need to practice better this week, so that we're more dialed in on Friday night. Hopefully, the Mariner game was a wake-up call. We can't have weeks of practice like we did last week and expect to go out and play at a high level."

Mariner running back Adrian Black rushed for 164 yards on nine carries and scored two touchdowns. Quarterback A.J. VanWieringen was 8-for-16 for 74 yards and one touchdowns. He also ran for a score.
