Two Wesco 4A South Division games on tap for Friday night
By Tony Dondero and David Pan Enterprise reporters
Week one of the National Football League saw injuries take its toll on several of the league’s prominent players. Luckily, it appears most of our high school teams escaped relatively unscathed.
League play starts for four teams – Jackson/Shorewood and Mountlake Terrace/Mariner, while everyone else plays non-conference opponents.
Edmonds-Woodway, the four-time defending league champion, will look to grab its first victory of the season against Everett following its heartbreaking loss to Meadowdale.
Jackson at Shorewood Game time: 7 p.m. Shoreline Stadium. Records: Jackson 1-0, Shorewood 0-1. Last year’s result: Jackson 7, Shorewood 3. Last week’s results: Jackson 32, Stanwood 8; Monroe 20, Shorewood 6. Players to watch: Jackson’s Taylor Cox, one of the top running backs in Wesco, rushed for 205 yards on 17 carries and scored on touchdown runs of 42 and 68 yards against Stanwood. Jackson quarterback Andy Gay was 8-of-12 passing for 106 yards and threw a 17-yard touchdown pass to receiver Jordan Kellington. Running back Riley Carr scored on runs of five and four yards for Jackson as well. Shorewood’s Dorian Lair rushed for 112 yards on 17 carries and quarterback Jon-O Hendricks completed 6-of-8 passes for 45 yards including a 9-yard touchdown strike to tight end Taylor Astel against Monroe. Breakdown: Jackson turned the ball over four times last year and escaped with a win at Shoreline Stadium, but the team returns nine offensive starters this season and is much more experienced. The Timberwolves did not turn the ball over at all in its win over Stanwood in week one and if they take care of the football they should cruise in this one. Expect Cox to have a big game against a Shorewood defense that had trouble stopping Monroe. Shorewood should come out sharper than in week one but they could still be missing some key players. Lair accounted for more than 75 percent of the T-birds’ offense against Monroe and the T-birds only had six first downs. Other players will have to step up for Shorewood to stay close. Enterprise pick: Jackson 30, Shorewood 13.
Eastside Catholic at Archbishop Murphy Game time: 7 p.m. at Terry Ennis Stadium. Records: Eastside Catholic 1-0, Archbishop Murphy 1-0. Last year’s result: Did not play. Last week’s results: Eastside Catholic 16, Eisenhower 8; Archbishop Murphy 26, Lynden 15 Players to watch: Eastside Catholic’s Marion Bactol and Kellen Matsuno each scored a touchdown in a tough win over Eisenhower. Archbishop Murphy’s ground attack was led by running backs Randy Gordan (six carries, 58 yards) and CJ Milburn (nine carries, 52 yards). Quarterback Jake Downs threw for two touchdowns. Breakdown: Eastside Catholic will look to grind it out with a punishing ground attack, much like Archbishop Murphy. But under new head coach Dave Ward, the Wildcats will go to the air when the opportunity arises. Still, Archbishop Murphy stuck with his ground game for the most part in its season opener. Ten different Wildcats carried the ball. Whichever offensive line has the edge should win the game. Enterprise pick: Archbishop Murphy 20, Eastside Catholic 17.
Everett at Edmonds-Woodway Game time: 5 p.m. at Edmonds Stadium. Records: Edmonds-Woodway 0-1, Everett 1-0. Last year’s result: Did not play. Last week’s results: Meadowdale 28, Edmonds-Woodway 27; Everett 29, Bishop Blanchet 14. Players to watch: Edmonds-Woodway senior running back Tony Heard rushed for 228 yards on 28 carries and scored three touchdowns in the Warriors’ loss. Senior cornerback Din Kuses picked off two passes. Everett running back David Andre amassed 260 yards on 15 carries and scored three touchdowns in the Seagulls’ victory. Breakdown: Edmonds-Woodway is looking to rebound after last week’s heartbreaking loss to Meadowdale. The Warriors’ special teams must play better. Heard is off to another strong start on both offense and defense. For many of his teammates, the Meadowdale game was their first taste of varsity play. They should be more comfortable in their second game. Edmonds-Woodway’s defense will need to contain Andre. Enterprise pick: Edmonds-Woodway 35, Everett 21.
Mountlake Terrace at Mariner Game time: 7 p.m. at Goddard Stadium. Records: Mountlake Terrace 1-0, Mariner 0-1. Last year’s result: Mariner 35, Mountlake Terrace 13. Last week’s results: Mountlake Terrace 29, Lynnwood 6; Lake Stevens 36, Mariner 34 Players to watch: Mountlake Terrace senior running back Percy Anyimah rushed for 107 yards on six carries and scored two touchdowns. Teammate Nick Deller picked off two passes and ran back one 30 yards for a touchdown. Mariner wide receiver Tevin Dillon caught three touchdown passes from quarterback A.J. VanWieringen in the loss to Lake Stevens. Breakdown: The Hawks need to raise their level of play on offense, defense and special teams if they are going to stay with the high-flying Marauders. Mountlake Terrace’s offense sputtered against Lynnwood. The Hawks are hoping their defense can continue to force turnovers. After taking a 21-0 lead against Lake Stevens, Mariner’s defense allowed 27 unanswered points. Look for the Marauders to shore up their defensive play. Enterprise pick: Mariner 27, Mountlake Terrace 20.
Shorecrest at Ferndale Game time: 7 p.m. at Ferndale High School. Records: Ferndale 1-0, Shorecrest 0-1. Last year’s result: Did not play. Last week’s results: Ferndale 47, Bellingham 8; Marysville-Pilchuck 46, Shorecrest 14. Players to watch: Three-year starter Casey Locker, the younger cousin of the Huskies’ Jake Locker, is an experienced, athletic and highly capable quarterback as is running back Spencer Hannah. Hannah, a senior, rushed for three touchdowns in week one while fellow senior Locker rushed for two. Shorecrest’s Michael Harris broke free for a 68-yard touchdown run in week one, one of the few bright spots for the Scots against Marysville-Pilchuck. Breakdown: Ferndale, which came into the season ranked 10th statewide out of all classifications by MaxPreps, is a heavy favorite at home against the young Scots, who have a brutal non-league schedule the first three weeks of the season with Wesco North favorite Snohomish on Sept. 19. Shorecrest ought to be improved after struggling against Marysville-Pilchuck but playing on the road at Ferndale will be a huge challenge. Shorecrest will need to take care of the ball and get some breaks to stay in the game. Most likely, coach Mike Wollan will be looking for week-to-week improvement in this one rather than paying too much attention to the scoreboard. Enterprise pick: Ferndale 48, Shorecrest 14.
Meadowdale at Stanwood Game time: 7 p.m. at Stanwood High School. Records: Meadowdale 1-0, Stanwood 0-1. Last year’s result: Did not play. Last week’s results: Meadowdale 28, Edmonds-Woodway 27; Jackson 32, Stanwood 8. Players to watch: Meadowdale quarterback Matt McDonagh threw a pair of touchdowns to tight end Connor Hamlett. The Mavericks have plenty of options in the backfield, including Darin Dysart, Ben Shebly and Sam Werner. Stanwood’s Ben Zipp scored his team’s only touchdown against a tough Jackson defense. Breakdown: Meadowdale has to guard against a letdown after an emotional victory over archrival Edmonds-Woodway. The Mavericks look to have simply too many offensive weapons against a relatively young Stanwood team that could not get much going against Jackson. Meadowdale’s special teams gave their offense consistently good field position. Enterprise pick: Meadowdale 30, Stanwood 8.
Arlington at Lynnwood Game time: 8 p.m. at Edmonds Stadium. Records: Arlington 1-0, Lynnwood 0-1. Last year’s result: Did not play. Last week’s results: Arlington 37, Glacier Peak 7; Mountlake Terrace 29, Lynnwood 6 Players to watch: Arlington quarterback Jake Parduhn ran for three touchdowns and threw for two more against Glacier Peak. He finished with 273 yards of total offense (153 rushing and 120 passing). Lynnwood’s Geoff Meinken rushed for 73 yards on 12 carries. Royals coach Dorian Manza said he plans to get Meinken more touches during the game. Breakdown: The Lynnwood defense faces a major challenge in shutting down Parduhn. The Royals were able to keep Mountlake Terrace in check for most of the game. Lynnwood’s offense struggled to find any rhythm and didn’t give quarterback Jared Shippey much protection. The Royals’ best hope is probably to keep the ball out of the Eagles’ hands. That means the offensive line needs to control the line of scrimmage. Enterprise pick: Arlington 28, Lynnwood 21 King’s at Charles Wright Academy Game time: 7 p.m. at Charles Wright Academy. Records: King’s 1-0, Charles Wright Academy 1-0 Last year’s result: Did not play. Last week’s results: Charles Wright 39, Tacoma Baptist 28; King’s 51, LaConner 12. Players to watch: King’s Thomas Vincent ran for four touchdowns and passed for two more in his first varsity start. Receiver John Burley caught three passes for 110 yards and a touchdown. Running back Zack Berg’s main contribution in week one was as a blocker. Charles Wright’s Ishmael Stinson ran for two touchdowns and caught a touchdown pass against Tacoma Baptist. Breakdown: Charles Wright runs the Wing-T and his strong, fast, physical team that will be a much stiffer test for King’s. The Knights gained confidence with its first on-field win since 2006 in week one and hope to build on that accomplishment. Vincent showed why he earned the starting job in the win over LaConner and the young sophomore will get a chance to continue his development on the road in Tacoma. Enterprise pick: King’s 27, Charles Wright 26.
