Katie Benson commits to SPU women’s basketball

Posted at 2:10 pm by Mike Cane, Herald Writer

Katie Benson, a senior forward from Snohomish High School, has verbally committed to play basketball for Seattle Pacific University, Snohomish girls hoops coach Ken Roberts said this week.

Benson (6-foot-1) is one of the area’s top returning players. Last season she helped lead Snohomish to seventh place at the Class 4A state tournament. Benson averaged 18.8 points and 8.5 rebounds at state and was voted onto the all-tournament second team.

Benson can sign a binding NCAA National Letter of Intent with Seattle Pacific no sooner than Nov. 12.

Benson’s older sister is also SPU-bound, Roberts said. Sydney Benson, a 2005 Snohomish grad, has transferred from Eastern Washington University to Seattle Pacific. Sydney, a 6-2 forward, averaged 11.5 points and 7.4 boards for EWU during the 2007-2008 season, leading the team in both categories.
