Celebrating Shoreline

Shoreline is ‘Clean & Green’ for city’s 13th annual festival

"Shoreline: Clean And Green" is the theme for the 13th annual Celebrate Shoreline festival continuing today through Sunday for a weekend of community wide events.

The festivities kick off today from noon to 5 p.m. today, Friday, Aug. 15, is the Teen Event Skate Competition at the Connie King Skate Park at Paramount School Park, located at 15300 Eighth Ave. NE in Shoreline. The free event features a skateboard competition for ages 6 and older, with prizes, food and giveaways available throughout the day. Registration starts at 11:30 a.m. for Timed Run, Best Trick and "Highest Ollie" competitions. Helmets and signed liability form are required to participate.

A full day of events is planned for Saturday, Aug. 16, beginning bright and early at 10 a.m. with the Cruise-in Car Show, hosted by the Shoreline Historical Museum and the City of Shoreline, displays vintage and modern vehicles on the Ridgecrest Elementary School grounds, located at 16516 10th Ave. NE. Paid registration for participating cars; judges will present awards in several categories.

The focal point of the festivities is the Celebrate Shoreline Parade with its "green" environmental theme. The parade starts at 11 a.m. and follows a route south on 15th Avenue Northeast from Northeast 180th Street to Northeast 165th Street in North City.

The parade disperses at noon at the Ridgecrest Elementary grounds, where the Celebrate Shoreline festival picks up with arts & crafts booths, food vendors and community booths until 5 p.m. For children, inflatables, games, hands-on art activities and face painting will add to the festival atmosphere. Musical entertainment will be presented throughout the afternoon as well.

It wouldn't be Celebrate Shoreline without acknowledging the city's beaches, and from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 17, the Sandcastle Building Contest does just that. The event takes place at Richmond Beach Saltwater Park, located at 2021 NW 190th St. in Shoreline. Residents and visitors are invited to participate. Registration for the all ages event, hosted by the Richmond Beach Community Council, is free, but participants should bring their own building tools.

Not directly tied to Celebrate Shoreline, but a unique in town attraction this weekend nonetheless, is the Puget Sound Antique Radio Association's Annual Swap Meet which takes place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sundday, Aug. 17, in the

Shoreline Historical Museum's parking lot, 749 N. 175th St., Shoreline.

Make note that several roads will be closed Saturday to accommodate the annual Celebrate Shoreline Parade. From 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., 15th Avenue NE from NE 155th Street north to 24th Avenue NE, 15th Place NE north of NE 180th Street and NE 165 Street from 10th Avenue NE to 15th Avenue NE will be inaccessible to car traffic. There will also be no access to or from the side streets off the closed roads.
