Mariner update

New series

Opponent: Cleveland Indians

When: 7:10 p.m. today, 12:55 p.m. Saturday, 1:10 p.m. Sunday.

Where: Safeco Field

TV: Fox Sports Net today and Sunday, no TV on Saturday.

Radio: KOMO (1000 AM), all three games.

Pitchers: Today -- Seattle right-hander Felix Hernandez (6-6, 2.95 earned run average) vs. left-hander Aaron Laffey (5-5, 3.45). Saturday -- left-hander Jarrod Washburn (4-8, 4.83) vs. left-hander Jeremy Sowers (0-5, 7.81). Sunday -- Right-hander Carlos Silva (4-11, 5.46) vs. left-hander Cliff Lee (12-2, 2.31).

Putz pitches tonight

Injured closer J.J. Putz makes his second rehab outing tonight, pitching one inning for the Tacoma Rainiers at Cheney Stadium.

Putz has been on the disabled list since June 12 because of a hyperextended right elbow. He pitched two perfect innings Tuesday in Arizona for the rookie-level Peoria Mariners, striking out three of the six hitters he faced.

"The results really didn't matter, but the best part was that I was putting the ball where I wanted it," Putz said.

Manager Jim Riggleman said he would wait until after tonight's outing before deciding whether to activate Putz. When that happens, Putz probably will pitch in a few non-save situations before returning to his closer duties.

Setting the rotation: The Mariners' starting rotation isn't definite beyond Sunday because of Erik Bedard's tender left shoulder and Miguel Batista's groin, which forced him out of his last start early.

Riggleman believes Batista will be ready to start Monday against the Red Sox, but he's doubtful about Bedard and is planning to start Dickey on Tuesday.

Now batting fifth: With the Indians pitching three left-handed starters this weekend, Riggleman said he would bat Jose Lopez fifth behind Adrian Beltre.

New first baseman Bryan LaHair, when he starts, probably will bat seventh or eighth. Because the Indians have three left-handed starters, the left-handed-hitting LaHair may start only once in this weekend's series.

"He'll play a lot against right-handed pitching and he'll play against left-handers at times," Riggleman said.

Otherwise, Riggleman will have the same challenge getting consistent playing time for catcher Kenji Johjima and DH/first baseman Jose Vidro.

"We'll look at who's pitching for the other club and who gives us our best chance," Riggleman said.
