(click to enlarge) Marysville students receive fire scholarships The Marysville Fire District Foundation recently awarded five scholarships worth $1,000 each to Marysville students at a ceremony at Fire Station No. 62 in Marysville. Tarr plans to major in pre-med studies. He is the son of John and Julie Tarr of Everett. Lake Stevens student earns Eagle Scout rank Tylor Jones, 17, a member of Boy Scout Troop No. 42, recently earned the Eagle Scout rank during his junior year at Lake Stevens High School. He is currently working on the Bronze and Gold Palms ranks. Tylor is the son of Ed and Tammie Jones of Lake Stevens. He has been a Scout since age 6. While in the Scouts, Tylor has been involved in venture crew and is currently a member of the Order of the Arrow. He also took part in Orion National Youth Leadership Training. In order to achieve the rank of Eagle Scout, Tylor spent six years in Scouts, earning 29 merit badges. He worked on community service projects and held leadership positions including senior patrol leader, assistant patrol leader and many others. For his Eagle service project, Tylor planned and organized the construction of a 6-foot-tall, 150-foot-long chain-link fence for the preschool at the Sanctuary Ministries Church. Tylor led the team of 26 volunteers, including Scouts, family and friends who volunteered more than 140 hours on the project. Everett student receives Cascadia scholarship Cascadia Community College Foundation recently awarded Evana Block of Everett a scholarship, sponsored by Fred Jackson, for the 2008-09 academic year Lake Stevens grad receives scholarship David Santos, a recent graduate of Lake Stevens High School, recently received the Jill L. Renshaw Memorial Scholarship worth $3,000. Santos plans to attend the University of Washington to study to become a medical doctor with a focus on research. While in high school, Santos was a member of the Knowledge Bowl A Team, Hi-Q Team, National Honor Society and was a "Gold Scholar." He took pre-calculus at Everett Community College in the summer and was active in various clubs at the high school. His parents are Manual and Julie Santos. Marysville resident named to Dean's list Corry Haines of Marysville, a 2005 graduate of Archbishop Murphy High School, recently was named to the Dean's list for the spring 2007-08 quarter at Rochester Institute of Technology in New York. A third-year student in Rochester's B. Thomas Golisano College of Computing and Information Sciences, Corry is studying computer science. Haines is the son of David and Yvonne Haines of Marysville. Marysville teacher wins scholarship The Rachel Royston Permanent Scholarship Foundation recently named Wendy Willie, a special education teacher at Marysville-Pilchuck High School, a scholarship recipient for the 2008-09 school year. Willie plans to use her scholarship to attend Seattle Pacific University as she works towards a master of education degree in school counseling. Snohomish student earns B.A. from Kenyon College Madeline Courtney of Snohomish recently received a bachelor of arts degree at the 180th commencement of Kenyon College in Ohio. Courtney graduated magna cum laude with a major in studio art. She was awarded membership into Phi Beta Kappa, a national collegiate honor society. She also received distinction on her studio art senior exercise. Courtney is the daughter of Herb and Teresa Courtney of Snohomish. High school musicals honored by Fifth Avenue The Fifth Avenue Theatre recently announced the nominees for its sixth-annual Fifth Avenue High School Musical Theatre Awards at Benaroya Hall in Seattle. A high school version of the Tony Awards, the awards are designed to honor high school drama students doing musical theater. During the school year, a team of theater professionals evaluated each school's production. Nominations were made in 21 categories, from overall musical production to lobby display. The nominated students and schools performed numbers from their shows at the awards ceremony. Snohomish County schools that were honored: Outstanding overall musical production: Kamiak High School for "Guys and Dolls" and Stanwood High School for "Fiddler on the Roof." Outstanding direction: Kamiak High School for "Guys and Dolls" and Stanwood High School for "Fiddler on the Roof." Honorable mention: Edmonds Home School Resource Center for "Ruthless!" Masons honor student, teacher in Everett The Valley of Everett of The Scottish Rite of Freemasonry recently awarded a $5,000 scholarship to Kristin Villanueva, a graduating Cascade High School senior who plans to attend the University of California at Davis to begin studies to become a physician. The Valley of Everett also recognized Evergreen Middle School teacher Theresa Kemp as teacher of the year. Kemp, who teaches reading and writing, received a check for $1,000.
