While it looks like a rental at the very least, Mortal Kombat v. DC seems off-base with the source material.

E3 Roundup: Nintendo, Sony, and… Superman v. Sub Zero?

Interesting week, some mixed feelings on what was announced in the Nintendo and Sony presentations, respectfully.
Sony rolled out some great titles and made a few bold announcements: the PS3 will be upgraded to an 80 gig unit by Aug. which will retail for $399.99. Still not impressed? Evidently there is a slew of new games that will be released as well, including the very impressive looking Resistance 2 and God of War III. Sony, hard at work to gain your love and devotion, is making some big moves to reclaim the glory days for the PS2.
The Nintendo press conference on the other hand was bizarrely self-centered. There is no doubt that Nintendo is an innovator. Like their first console of old, the Wii is a cultural force unto itself.
That's why it was so disappointing for them to ascend the stage at E3 to speak and have nothing to say.
Satoru Iwata and Reggie Fils-Aime both took turns acknowledging the success of the DS and Wii and their respective market penetration, crossing the gender gap and creating systems that are all-inclusive... but it seemed to me to be the proverbial resting of their laurels. Not to say that Clone Wars won't be a fun title, or that GTA: Chinatown won't be a good play on the DS, but can that be all they have to offer at the big show? They said nothing about future titles, nor anything that could be in development that would get us excited. Just hints regarding DS applications for cooking, travel, et cetera, ad nauseum. Which is great, thanks, but I already have a PDA. I want games. I want fun. Don't waste my time with lackluster titles. Just saying you are an innovator doesn’t make you the gaming equivalent of Prometheus.
In other gaming news, there have been some pretty great announcements. But before I get to that, I must devolve into a fanboy. You see, I am huge comic geek and have been collecting since I was 10. So perhaps you’ll be as pleased and mortified as I was when this little nugget of doom dropped:
Mortal Kombat v. DC
And now a rant that will probably get me in trouble...
I enjoy fighting games as the next fellow and I am waiting with undisguised glee for the next installment of the Street Fighter and Soul Caliber franchise but Mortal Kombat v. DC?
At first glance the game looks ok. The characters themselves look a bit wooden and move a bit sluggishly at times, but overall it looks adequate. The game features DC heroes such as Superman, the Flash, Batman and Catwoman plus the regular MK crew. At this point and time it would make for a decent rental.
What slays me is DC superheroes fighting the tired old MK automatons. Why isn’t this DC v. Marvel? Or DC v. Image? But no, it’s “DC v. The Most Played Out Characters in Existence.” And what about balance? I may be continuing to out-geek myself, but would any of those 128 bit boneheads really have a chance against The Man of Steel? Answer: No. Superman would pummel Sub Zero into a Slurpee. This game is so hyped and based on the current comic book exploitation genre I'm waiting for it to become a Michael Bay movie.
Come on guys! Everyone know's MK is all about the fatalities, yet you have Batman who's first rule is not to kill anyone. I'm not worried about the adaptation of the source material, I'm just disapointed none of the Midway crew has read a comic. Perhaps they'll see The Dark Knight this weekend and a light will come on.
Other games really do look promising and there have been some major release news that has been dropped. Drop by Friday and I’ll have my top 10 picks from E3 ready to go.
