Waterfront site now targeted for new parkland

More parkland could be coming to Edmonds’ Bowl.

At the very least, adding parks at the controversial waterfront redevelopment site is now — and for the first time — a priority for Edmonds’ parks department.

Councilmember Steve Bernheim wrote, and successfully passed, a series of provisions July 15 to support the possible purchase of land at the Harbor Square/Antique Mall redevelopment site, or anywhere else in the Bowl.

The provisions were amendments to the city’s park and cultural plan update for the city’s comprehensive plan.

They did not commit the city to any purchase, nor did they tie the city’s hands by forbidding other park purchases. But they did encourage property purchases, or public-private partnerships, where no encouragement existed before.

Bernheim said his ultimate goal would be for the city to build some sort of Heritage Center in the Bowl that would attract tourism.

Despite passing the new provisions, the City Council did not approve the parks and cultural plan update document itself, instead unanimously referring the issue to a planned summer council retreat.
