No surprise: Ichiro elected to All-Star team

Posted at 12:30 pm by By Kirby Arnold

In an event as surprising as the sunrise, fans have voted Mariners right fielder Ichiro Suzuki as a starter for the All-Star Game. It will be his eighth straight All-Star start.

Suzuki got 2,019,912 votes, third among AL outfielders behind the Rangers' Josh Hamilton (3,708,709) and the Red Sox's Manny Ramirez (3,428,577). No other Mariners player was among the top eight in voting at their positions.

The Indians' Grady Sizemore, a 2000 Cascade High School graduate, was 10th among outfielders.

The AL starters will be Kevin Youkilis of the Red Sox at first base, Dustin Pedroia of the Red Sox at second, Alex Rodriguez of the Yankees at third, Derek Jeter of the Yankees at shortstop, Joe Mauer of the Twins at catcher, David Ortiz of the Red Sox at DH, and Hamilton, Ramirez and Suzuki in the outfield.

The All-Star game will be played July 15 at Yankee Stadium.
