Flashback: 2006 Jackson baseball team

This morning I was sorting through a tall stack of old work-related stuff — rosters, state-tournament programs, newspapers — and I found something interesting.
It was the season stat sheet for the 2006 Jackson High baseball team, arguably one of the best squads in state history. The Timberwolves went 27-0, won the Class 4A state championship and ended the year ranked No. 2 in the nation by Baseball America magazine.

Back to the stat sheet I dug up today.
The numbers the Timberwolves compiled in ’06 are mind-blowing. Here are some of the most impressive team batting stats.
*Batting average: .410
*Home runs: 33
*On-base percentage: .497
*Runs batted in: 263
The team’s pitching stats were also ridiculously good.
*Earned-run average: 0.95 (in 169 innings)
*Strikeouts: 205
Jackson’s lineup was filled with standouts that season. The biggest name was Travis Snider, who became a first-round draft pick of the Toronto Blue Jays. Snider’s offensive totals that season included a .500 average, 11 home runs, 45 RBI and 50 runs scored.
Snider didn’t lead the team in RBI. That honor went to Joey Lind, who had 46.
Six Jackson players with at least 30 at-bats hit better than .400: Snider, Joey Petosa (.500), Chris Lynch (.489), Lind (.455), Joe Markovich (.406) and Danny Oh (.404).
The team’s primary starting pitchers, Cam Nobles and Geoff Brown, both went 10-0. Nobles had a 0.71 ERA and 99 strikeouts in 59 innings. Brown finished with a 1.06 ERA and 68 K’s in 59-2/3 innings.
Looking back on this, I realize I might never cover a prep team, in any sport, that was so utterly dominant. Those Timberwolves were in a class of their own.
