Wildcats win 2A District baseball title

Archbishop Murphy's batters were persistent and productive. Now the Wildcats are 2A District 1 baseball champions.

Archbishop Murphy scored in five different innings and received four innings of scoreless relief pitching from Dylan Healow to defeat Cedarcrest 9-6 May 10 in Anacortes.

"I'm real proud of the guys," Archbishop Murphy head coach Mark Potoshnik said. "We had consistent offensive production."

Pat Kelly was 3-for-3 with a double and three RBI and sophomore Konrad Garbrick added two RBI on two hits.

Cedarcrest scored all six of its runs in the third inning, before Healow entered and shut them out the rest of the way.

Archbishop Murphy takes on Aberdeen at 1 p.m., Saturday, May 17 at Volunteer Field in Anacortes. If the Wildcats win, they would then face either Sehome or Kingston at 4 p.m.

The meet concludes May 15 with the top 15 players advancing to next week's state tournament.

Archbishop Murphy's Cameron Zwaller and Sultan's Bradley Green both shots 153s to become the Cascade Conference's top finishers. Other Wildcats qualifying for state were Chase Larsen and Bray Redington.

For the girls, Archbishop Murphy's Michelle Groom and Erin Gogel qualified for the state tournament.

E-W graduate hitting his stride in minors

Shortstop Chris Minaker has found his hitting stroke with the Class A High Desert Mavericks.

Minaker, a shortstop who starred at Edmonds-Woodway High School and Stanford, had raised his average to .301.

Minaker, a 2002 Edmonds-Woodway graduate, had hit safely in his previous 10 games, batting .350 with three of his four home runs in that span. He had 16 runs batted in.

The Mavericks entered Tuesday 15-16 and in second place in the California League's South Division, two games behind Lake Elsinore.
