Edmonds' special athletes win at states

Two Edmonds-affiliated Special Olympics teams competed in the state Special Olympics basketball tournament in Wenatchee from Feb. 29 - March 2. One team took second and won a silver medal.

The teams were made up of high school-age competitors.

The first team included the following players, organizers said: Kyle Alcorn, Ashleigh Cook, Dominick Monillas, Meranda Thurnau and Elizabeth Van Scoy from Edmonds-Woodway H.S.; Patrick Doonan, Kyle Imthurn and Courtney Pruitt from Lynnwood H. S.; and Stacee Hardin and Raphael Partida from the Edmonds V.O.I.C.E program. Their coach is Ken Imthurn.

The second team took fourth place at state, and won team ribbons. Those team members were: Christian Camacho, Seth Cruz, Teresa Homad, Kayra Morgan and Ally Vannoy from Edmonds-Woodway H.S.; Luis Jimanez, Sally Lindeke and Brianna Watson from Lynnwood H.S.; and Michael Holmes and Chris Linnell from the Edmonds V.O.I.C.E. program. A year on, thankful and healthy(ier)

On March 16, 2007, while Barbara Mercer was working inside her Edmonds frame shop on Fifth Avenue, a car came crashing into her business and came close to ending her life.

Now, thankful and mostly recovered, Mercer is marking the anniversary by thanking all the people who helped rescue her from the wreck and get her back on her feet.

"I want to thank all the people who put their efforts into rescuing me on that early afternoon," she wrote in a letter. "Due to instant witnesses calls, the police were there immediately. If the paramedics would not have come as fast as they did, I could have been brain damaged due to collapsed lungs and loss of oxygen. But they reached me just in time to rush me to Harborview Hospital.

"Weeks later, in the hospital, I learned about the many, many people who tried to help that afternoon. I do want to say my special thanks to not only my immediate business neighbors, but especially to the wonderful construction crews from across the McGregor Building who came to free me from the rubble! I want to thank the Edmonds police, firemen and the paramedics.

"A prayer circle (after I had been transported to the hospital) must have been the most emotional and healing service for me: I am alive! I thank you all!" she wrote.
