Edmonds school teaches writing without seeing

In celebration of National Braille Literacy Month, the Imagine Children's Museum in Everett is featuring a special presentation by Edmonds' Louis Braille School.

The "Touch to See" program runs from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., tomorrow, Saturday, Jan. 12. Visitors to the museum will have the opportunity to braille their names on a braille writer, explore braille books with tactile illustrations, and try a talking calculator and braille watch. They will meet a guide dog and enjoy a story read in braille by the guide dog's handler.

The Louis Braille School, located in Edmonds, is a private, nonprofit day school for children who are visually impaired. January is the birth month of Louis Braille, the Frenchman who developed the raised dot system of reading and writing. Visit the Louis Braille School Web site at www.louisbrailleschool.org.

Blood supply at emergency levels

Western Washington's blood supply has been reduced to an emergency level, officials with the Puget Sound Blood Center have warned.

Due to the holidays, when many were traveling, schools were closed and schedules disrupted, the number of people in our community donating blood dropped significantly. In addition, a large number of patients in Western Washington hospitals required multiple blood transfusions during this time. Because the life-saving blood was available for these patients, the community blood supply has reached an emergency level.

For the safety and care of future patients, the Blood Center urges donations.

The closest center is at 19723 Highway 99 in Lynnwood.

Schedule an appointment by calling 800-398-7888. Walk-ins are also welcome. Visit www.psbc.org for more information
