School Briefs
Edmonds college planning night set for March 27
The counselors of the Edmonds School District invite juniors and sophomores and their parents to attend a Junior-Sophomore College Planning Night at 7 p.m. March 27 in the theater at Mountlake Terrace High School to learn more about the college admission process.
Guest speakers will address the many issues facing students and families today. The keynote speaker will be Dr. Philip Ballinger, director of admissions at the University of Washington.
Breakout sessions will include applying to state universities, community colleges, financing a college education, writing the college admission essay and more.
Call the counseling center at any Edmonds district high school for information.
Local school adopts Project Lead The Way
Mountlake Terrace High School has incorporated courses from Project Lead The Way, or PLTW, into its curriculum. PLTW is a not-for-profit organization that offers pre-engineering and science curricula for middle and high school students.
Mountlake Terrace High School has adopted a team-teaching method for its PLTW courses to ensure that all students, not just those at the top of their class, are able to succeed. The courses aim to advance education in the science, technology, engineering and mathematics fields to help prepare the future work force in the ever-growing global marketplace.
EHRC debate student goes to nationals
Ian Laster, member of the Edmonds Homeschool Resource Center's Speech and Debate Team, placed third in Impromptu Speaking at the WIAA 3A State Speech Tournament. He will also represent Puget Sound at the National Forensic League Tournament in Wichita, Kan., in June. At the national competition, he will compete in International Extemporaneous Speaking.
Fifth-grader in state geography bee
Terrace Park School fifth-grader Scarlett Strauss will compete in the Washington State Geography Bee on March 30 in Tacoma.
The winner of this competition will represent Washington state in the National Geography Bee held in Washington, D.C., at the end of May. Strauss is one of 100 students who qualified for the state competition among students in grades four through eight.
A resident of Edmonds, Strauss is in the Challenge Program at Terrace Park in the Edmonds School District.
